The risk of contracting a hospital-acquired infection is dropping in the US, and that is good news, but the statistics are still far from comforting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 25 patients in the US will pick up an infection at a hospital or similar medical facility. This means that over the course of a year, about 600,000 patients come down with a nosocomial, or hospital-acquired, infection. Of them, about 74,000 end up battling more than one. Marketed as a healthier alternative to conventional cigarettes because they do not expose users to smoke or tar, electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have seen a major upsurge in popularity in recent years. However, many people do not realize the hazards the liquid nicotine used in these devices pose. In the past few years, calls to US poison control centers involving e-cigarettes have risen sharply. About half of these calls involve children ages 5 and under.

An avalanche along the most popular route up Mount Everest killed at least 12 Nepali mountain guides on Friday. Several other climbers were still missing in the hours following the event. Prior to this avalanche, the deadliest day on Everest was May 11, 1996, when eight people lost their lives in a storm. In all, 15 people died attempting to summit the mountain that year, making it the deadliest year in Everest's history. It is still early in Everest's peak climbing season, meaning this year could well surpass that unfortunate record.
