West Virginia Legislature

House Speaker Tim Miley and his leadership team are forming a Small Business, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development work group with the intent of it becoming a standing committee focusing on those issues when the regular legislative session begins Jan. 8.
The West Virginia Legislature passed House Bill 2014, the Budget Bill, in just three days of an extended session.
Today the Senate completed Senate Bill 105,which would allow rule making authority relating to administration, collection and enforcement of local sales, use and excise taxes by the Tax Commissioner.
The House convened today to consider and pass three bills and adjourn the 1st Extraordinary Session.
The Legislature convened this evening for the 2013 First Extraordinary Session to complete legislation on two bills.

The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is getting a federal grant to expand Putnam County's Veterans Treatment Court. Officials say the $50,000 federal planning grant will allow the court to expand into a Mental Health and Veterans Treatment Court.
The West Virginia Department of Education is getting a grant to curb gun violence by connecting families, schools and communities to mental health services. The agency is set to receive the $9.7 million from Project AWARE.
A man convicted of killing a Putnam County sheriff's deputy in 1989 will remain behind bars for at least three more years. Media outlets report that the West Virginia Parole Board on Monday denied parole for Robert Gray following a hearing at Huttonsville Correctional Center.
A member of West Virginia's House of Delegates used money from his campaign account to support the Mason County 4-H club in a unique manner: He bought a champion steer. West Virginia Delegates Jim Butler and Scott Cadle combined to bid $5 a pound on the steer, the 1,335-pound George VI, at the Mason County Fair in August.
According to Wikipedia, the Democratic Party began its dominance and control of West Virginia in 1932. That's 82 years of Democrat control.
House Speaker Andy Tobin said Monday his staff received confirmation that Smith died Friday of what he called natural causes. Smith stepped down in 2006 after courts upheld a removal order from the state's Citizens Clean Elections Commission for violating campaign spending laws.

Hechler was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1958 and served until 1977. In 1984 Hechler was elected West Virginia Secretary of State and served until 2001.
The National Student/Parent Mock Election president says the event has helped introduce more than 50 million children, teens and adults to democracy since 1980.
